What Are Energy Cells?
Energy cells increase the maximum amount of spells and skills that Ori can expend. Without it, you will no longer be able to use any special skills such as Spirit Arc, Light Burst, Blaze, Spike, etc.
Energy cells are scattered throughout the maps available in Ori and the Will of the Wisp. Sometimes they are hidden, sometimes they are visible in plain sight. Though some of them can be acquired without any special skills, most of them can only be picked up once you get the abilities and/or spirit shard necessary to actually go to the area holding the cells.
Each acquisition will also increase your map percentage completion depending on the area you’ve obtained them.
Though the in-game menu says that there are a total of 20 energy cells in the game, you can only get energy cell fragments in some locations. And you need 2 fragments to complete 1 cell.
So there are actually a total of 24 locations where you can get energy cells and fragments in the game.
Inkwater Marsh
Location #1
Requirement(s): Double Jump
You can get this while doing the Inkwater Shrine Rumor quest.
Once you meet Opher, go down and break the left side of the huge log. This will open a path below. Continue to the right until you reach the area with a couple of spinning wheels and 2 jump-pads. It is just after the area with a huge spinning wheel and blue moss.
Use the first jump-pad to reach the 2nd jump-pad in the upper area. Then control Ori to reach the upper left platform while avoiding the thorns.
This will be the first energy fragment you can possibly get in the game.
Location #2
Requirement(s): Spirit Arc
You can find this in the same area where you got the Spirit Arc ability.
If you remember, shooting the blue orb in this area will help you back to the upper levels. But this time, wait for the platform to go up then hop to the stone surface of the platform.
This will give you access to the area below it. To your right, you should see an energy fragment.
Location #3
Requirement(s): Bash
This one is easy. Just go to the area indicated in the map screenshot above. Then use your bash ability to get the Energy Cell Fragment at the top.
Location #4
Requirement(s): Bash, Grapple (optional)
This is close to location #3. Just follow the map screenshot above.
In this area, you should see a jumping monster dude. You need its help so don’t kill it.
Essentially, you need to use your Bash ability while the monster is in mid-air. This will allow you to reach the hanging lantern at the top so you can land on the upper right platform.
Alternatively, you can wait until you get the Grapple ability. Use it to the blue flower above you so you can reach the hanging lantern.
Just pull the lever and the blocked path from the lower area will be lifted.
From there, it’s just a matter of walking down to it.
Location #5
Requirement(s): Sticky, Double Jump, Dash, Triple Jump (optional) Or Light Burst and Bash
You can find this fragment just above the Howl’s Fang item when you did the A Little Braver Side Quest.
The easiest way to get it is by using the Light Burst and Bash ability.
To do it, simply go the position yourself to where the Howl’ Fang item was. Then charge Light Burst and shoot it straight up. Then use your Bash ability so you can reach the platform above.
But if you’ve been following my walkthroughs, you can get this as early as you finished the Kwolok’s Hollow main quest.
To execute this, you will need the Dash, Sticky and Double.
Go to the area with the green orb just before you jumped a series of logs to reach the Howl’s Fang.
From there, use Double Jump and Dash to reach the wall above the hanging log. To your right, you will see a similar-looking wall.
Slowly drop from the first hanging log then use Double Jump and Dash to reach the second wall. Finally, do the same thing to reach the 3rd wall.
Above it, you will get the energy cell fragment.
It may be a little hard to execute this on your first try but it is possible. Having the Triple Jump spirit shard will also make this a lot easier.
Location #6
Requirement(s): Spirit Arc, Double Jump, Triple Jump, Dash, Bash Or Swim Dash + Bash
To get to this fragment, follow the starting point as indicated in the screenshot above. Jump to the hanging log in front of you then use Spirit Arc to shoot the exploding snail monster at the upper-left corner.
This will make the lantern tied to it, reachable so you can use your Bash ability and reach the platform above it.
Once you’re at the upper platform, you need to use your double-jump, triple-jump and dash ability to reach the hanging ledge at the far left corner from your position.
Once there, you should see another exploding snail monster at the upper left corner. Same drill here, shoot it with Spirit Arc then use the lantern that will fall from it to propel yourself to the left using the Bash ability. You should see another lantern after it.
On that one, use it to propel yourself upwards and get the spirit light container at the upper left corner. Then go to the platform to your left.
Once there, you’ll encounter a red jumping monster dude and a spider. You can kill them both then use triple jump to reach the hanging lantern in the middle. Or, you can bash the spider to reach the hanging lantern.
In the upper area, you will encounter another spider. Do NOT kill it. Instead, use bash so you can reach the hanging lantern on the upper-right area.
This should help you reach the platform above it where you’ll encounter a crab monster. Kill it then use the projectile from the slug monster to propel yourself to the upper-right platform. This is a secret area where you can get an energy cell fragment.
You can get another spirit light container if you continue to the path left of the energy cell fragment position.
Alternatively, you can wait until you finish the Luma Pools map and enter the same area from there. This will be the easier route since you only need the Swim Dash and Spirit Smash ability to get it. But you can get both a little earlier if you follow the first guide.
Kwolok’s Hollow
Location #7
Requirement(s): Spirit Edge or Spirit Smash
During the main quest, you will have to drain the poisoned water level to gain access to the lower floors of Kwolok’s Hollow.
Once you manage to drain the poisoned water twice, go to the lower area as indicated in the map. To get the energy cell fragment, you will need to destroy the wall blocking it.
Location #8
Requirement(s): Triple Jump or Double Jump, Dash, Bash
This is the area with a furnace continuously spitting out purple flames.
To get the energy cell fragment, start by going to the platform below it. Then use Triple Jump to reach and cling to the wall at the upper-left side of your screen.
It is also possible to get it using Double Jump, Dash and Bash if you do not have the Triple Jump Spirit Shard yet.
Here’s how you do it:
- Use bash to redirect the falling projectile to your right. You will have to quickly chase the projectile so you will have to use redirect it in a way that Ori will be propelled to the edge of the platform to your left. Check out the image above for a better description.
- Quickly chase the projectile by using Dash and Double jump.
- Once you caught up with it, use bash to launch yourself upwards.
- Use double jump to reach the platform where the Energy Cell Fragment is.
Location #9
Requirement(s): Clear The Wellspring (Purify the poisoned water)
You will need to purify the poisoned water by clearing the Wellspring map.
Then, simply go to the area indicated in the image above. Then swim all the way down at the lower right corner, you should get the energy cell.
This is a hidden area so just continue swimming down even if it seems a dead-end. It’s not.
Location #10
Requirement(s): Swim Dash
The proper way to get this is by simply using the Swim Dash ability so you can reach the platform holding the Energy Cell.
But you can actually force your way into the platform without ever acquiring the Swim Dash ability.
To do that, you need to time your jump to the thorns by using the Triple Jump ability to avoid getting knocked back. It will give you about a second of invulnerability so you can get into position towards the upper platform.
Wellspring Glades
Location #11
Requirement(s): Clear The Wellspring (Purify the poisoned water)
You will have to swim your way into the platform holding the energy cell so it won’t be possible without purifying the water from The Wellspring map first.
The path to the item is also a hidden passage so just swim right through it. Refer to the image above for more info.
Location #12
Requirement(s): Firemoth’s Delight or Triple Jump or Launch
There are actually many ways to get to the area holding this energy cell. But the earliest you can get it is as soon as you have enough spirit lights to purchase the Triple Jump ability. It might be a little challenging to get to the upper platform though.
Alternatively, you can wait until you have Tuley plant the Firemoth’s Delight plant. You can obtain it once you get the mysterious seed from Mouldwood Depth.
An even easier way is to way until you get the Launch ability. This will take the longest though since this ability can be obtained towards the late part of the game.
The Wellspring
Location #13
Requirement(s): Grapple, Triple Jump (optional)
This cell is not hidden in plain sight but you may have to take a couple of steps to get it.
Simply go to the area indicated in the screenshot above. From there, jump unto the rotating wheels to navigate towards the platform hold the energy cell.
The rest will be up to your timing but the process to get this isn’t overly complex.
Location #14
Requirement(s): Double Jump, Dash, Triple Jump (optional)
This cell is hidden behind a wooden blocked path at the upper right side of The Wellspring map from the entrance.
The easiest way to get there is to first move to the second-highest door then moving straight to the right.
Location #15
Requirement(s): Clear The Wellspring (Purify the poisoned water)
You can get this on the area below the first huge door you’ll encounter in the Wellspring map.
Getting to the energy cell is pretty easy but leaving the area will be quite hard if you have not purified the poisoned water first.
But you can certainly force your way out of the area if you have the Triple Jump ability and plenty of Life Cells. You will be taking damage and might take a lot of restarts though.
Mouldwood Depth
Location #16
Requirement(s): Water Breath (optional)
You can get this one at the far right side underwater. If you already purchased the Water Breath skill from Opher, then this one will be a cakewalk.
If not though, just make sure to breathe air from the first open space you’ll see underwater. It’s the one with the energy crystals at the top.
From there, just continue moving down until you see a path to your right leading to another path upwards.
Do this as fast as you can before you ran out of air or you’ll die and have to start over.
Location #17
Requirement(s): Water Breath (optional)
The concept of getting this energy cell is very similar to the previous one. Only this time, the path you have to take in order to make it to the energy cell is way longer.
It will be super easy with Water Breath but it’s actually not that hard without it. Just make sure to breathe air on every stop points along the way.
Compared to the previous one, there is only one stop point then you go to the energy cell. But for this one, there will be two and you have to make sure that you are swimming faster.
In the PC version, the default control for that is Space Bar or whatever key you use to jump. In the Xbox One version, I believe that would be the A button.
You can also use the Bash ability from the fish monsters so you can propel yourself faster.
Luma Pools
Location #18
Requirement(s): Bash
This energy cell is hidden behind a wall under the water. To destroy the wall, use the Bash ability to redirect the projectile spitted out by the underwater plant monster.
Location #19
Requirement(s): Ku’s Feather (optional)
To get this, you will need to open the gate blocking the path to the energy cell.
There are a couple of steps to do that:
- Use the bubbles to boost your jump height upwards until you reach the very top where you’ll find an algae-flower switch thingy.
- Tap the flower and the path blocking the area to your lower right will open.
- Go to the newly opened path as fast as you can or the sea plants blocking it will go back and you’ll have to tap the flower again.
- In the next area, you should see a jump-pad at the lower right. Use it so you can pull the lever found at the upper right corner.
- Once you pull the lever, the gate blocking the energy cell is now open.
By now, the plants may have already blocked your exit way out again. To exit it, just use the path below the jump-pad. - From there, just move the platform holding the cell to your left. Use Ku’s Feather as necessary.
Location #20
Requirement(s): Double Jump, Dash, Grapple or Swim Dash + Grapple
To get this one, simply move the area indicated in the map above. Then use double jump and dash to cling to the wall in front of you.
From there, use grapple so you can move upwards. While in mid-air, use double jump and dash to move to the left. You should see the energy cell fragment beyond that platform.
Alternatively, you can go down to the water and use Swim Dash to propel yourself up then use Grapple and repeat the same actions to get to the platform to your left.
Windswept Waste
Location #21
Requirement(s): Burrow
Simply go to the area indicated in the screenshot above. Then use the Burrow ability to move down the sands and follow the path to your left.
Location #22
Requirement(s): Burrow
You can find this cell beyond a hidden path.
In other words, just use your Burrow ability and move past the seemingly dead-end area to discover a new path.
Take a look at the image above as a reference.
Location #23
Requirement(s): Light Burst, Bash
Go to the area indicated in the map above.
Charge your Light Burst ability and aim it upwards. Then use the Bash ability to gain height and reach the upper left platform where you’ll find an energy cell
Windtorn Ruin
Location #24
Requirement(s): Burrow
After you finish the Boss Chase in Windtorn Ruin (which is the best by the way), warp back to the Spirit Well.
Then go back to the area just before the Gorlek statue where you found the final wisp.
From there, use your Burrow ability to the sand on the right. It may look like a dead-end but just plow straight through it and you should get the Energy Cell beyond that hidden path.
Conclusion
Getting all energy cells and fragments will help you achieve 100% completion on all maps. Some of them may be well hidden and some of them might require you more than a couple of steps.
Either way, this post is all you need to find all the energy cells.
